Warm home discount offers £140 voucher towards electricity bills to vulnerable households
A growing number of families on low incomes, who are some of the UK’s most vulnerable households, don’t have the money to adequately heat their homes.
Households who may struggle to afford to put the heating on over the winter period are being given a helping hand with a government-backed grant to put towards heating costs.
The warm home discount scheme has a £320million fund from which eligible UK households can claim £140 to put towards heating bills.
As the name suggests, the large energy companies (those who have in excess of 250,000 domestic customers) are part of the scheme.
To qualify for the £140, your name or your partner's needs to have been on the bill by 12 July 2015 and you also must receive the guarantee credit element of pension credit.
This credit tops up your weekly income if it's below £151.20 for single people or £230.85 for couples. Those who qualify this way should get the payment automatically.
If you don't qualify via the guarantee credit element of pension credit, you can still apply directly to your electricity supplier for help if you earn less than £16,000, - or claim certain means-tested benefits.
It is also available for those who have vulnerable households, such as children under five or looking after someone with disabilities.

Older households who already claim the winter fuel payment can also apply for the one-off discount on electricity bills via the scheme.
If you apply and are entitled to the grant the £140 will be applied as a one-off discount on your electricity bill.
If this doesn't apply to you directly, think if you have any friends or relatives who could benefit. Share and spread the word.
You should also check if you qualify for the Government's free boiler grant, which enables old, in-efficient heating boilers to be replaced completely free of charge. Read more...
